Your Questions About Signs Of Shaken Baby Syndrome

Mandy asks…
How is it possible for signs of Shaken Baby Syndrome to show up years later?
How is this merely possible? I thought if a child were shaken- no matter how much force was used, that SBS would show up relatively quick? As in a few days, or immediately?
How is possible to have an injury to the brain with no outer signs of trauma? How common is it for something such as SBS to be inflicted, but show no signs until later?

Baby Talk answers:
It’s NOT possible for signs of SBS to show up years later. In extremely rare cases a child won’t actually lose conscience until hours later (the brain just ends up swelling slower) but even then, there are definite signs.
Edit: Just wanted to add that head trauma that causes seizures later in life is not the same thing as SBS. Head trauma is like falling from a big height or a car accident….not the whiplash action of SBS.

Michael asks…
Shaken Baby Syndrome?
I brought my 51/2 month old baby to a B-day party today. One of my “friends” picked up my son and started to roughly play with him. She twisted him side to side roughly and repeatedly. Then she started shaking him up and down, bouncing his feet off the sofa. She held nothing back…she was at it full force, doing it as fast as she could. I stopped her immediately. It lasted less than 10 seconds. Then she walked off saying that my husband and I were “too careful” with our son. Our son is sleeping peacefully at home now. There appears to be nothing wrong. Should I take him to the ER. Will he get Shaken Baby Syndrome? What are the signs I should look for?
For the one that said I “exaggerated,” my baby was literally treated like a cocktail shaker. There is no exaggeration. It appeared to be done out of malice and wasn’t your normal play. My son went to bed a bit earlier than usual and didn’t wake up for his feed. I woke him just now and fed him. His sucking reflexes seem to be fine and so is his appetite.

Baby Talk answers:
1. When in doubt, go to the doctor.
2. Kick your “friends” @$s

Helen asks…
Can picking up a 22 month old to quick cause Shaken Baby Syndrome?
We were in the Toy store for over an hour, trying relentlessly to get our Daughter out of it…So, My husband finally forefully grabbed her and slung her on his hip…I am just scared this might have caused damage or something…I know it sounds silly, but I just worry alot. If godforbid it had caused damage, would the signs be immediately?

Baby Talk answers:
I’m an overprotective mom, too. Maybe this story will help you worry less. It did me….
My son has always been a biter. When he was a little over two, I picked him up because he was doing something he shouldn’t. He bit my shoulder. It hurt, so I pulled him away from my body. At that moment, he arched back, and I couldn’t hold him. He fell five feet straight to the floor. It scared us both, and of course, I called the doctor immediately. But, he was fine. (Stopped biting, too.) Kids are sturdy. They are made to take the normal knocks in life, plus a little extra.

Mark asks…
I know this is a silly ? but please, moms- about Shaken Baby Syndrome?
I know its not impossible for SBS signs to show up later if they had it, but if they really truly had it would signs show up immediately? I am always checking for my daughter to show signs cause i am so overly paranoid and terrified of sbs, and its making my life a living hell. I dont even like my husband to play with our daughter, or better yet anyone.,.Its awful to think this way.

Baby Talk answers:
This is obviously an obsession with you and is most likely related to some type of depression. You asked about this before so it really needs to be addressed professionally. Normal play is not going to cause Shaken Baby Syndrome. The force required to cause damage is going to be most likely applied by a person who is angry or frustrated, not playing with your daughter. If you don’t do anything else all day today you need to call your doctor and get in as soon as possible for a check up. Get your medicine adjusted and talk to a therapist. You all will feel better. You are not being silly nor are you in anyway an awful parent or person. Everyone goes through difficult times and this is one of those times for you. Call your doctor now. This is not going to get better without some help.

Joseph asks…
Car accident at less than 30mph with a 3 month old infant… could shaken baby syndrome occur?
Some research on child learning disabilities for a college class got me to thinking about shaken baby syndrome.
When my daughter was 3 months old we were rear ended. I was sitting a a dead stop, and some 18 year old was not paying attention and went right into the back of us. My daughter was nestled in her car seat as she should have been, facing the rear. The hit was hard enough that I my head almost hit the steering wheel and then the head rest. The police estimated he hit me at less than 30 mph. The airbags did not deploy.
I can not believe I had not thought of this before, but could my daughter have experienced shaken baby syndrome due to this accident?
What are the mild signs of SBS?
If not at risk for SBS, should I be worried about any other effects this car accident could have had on her, and I would not know until later in the school years?
Thanks.
I need to clarify:
This happened months ago, my daughter is 10 months old… and seems fine! I was just thinking in terms of anything that could have happened that I could not see physically.
When the impact happened, she was sleeping, and didn’t even wake up until her older sisters (who were sleeping) started crying from waking on impact. I was not hit dead on in the back, he swerved, and hit more like my left back corner.
there was no hospital visit, and the police listed us all as having no injuries in the police report. We were ok… I guess I’m now having second thoughts about the impact and how incredibly fragile a 3 month old’s brain is.
I feel like a crappy mother.

Baby Talk answers:
I was in a roll-over with my son when he was 3 months old. I fell asleep at the wheel doing 110kms/h The EMTs told me that since he was safely and properly seated in his car seat, he was fine. I didn’t remove him from his car seat until they checked him out.
Since your daughter was in her car seat, it did it’s job. It cradled her body on impact protecting her from sbs and whiplash. Had any part of her been hurt you would have noticed that first night.

Okay so I cant seem to get a straight answer from anyone how soon does the symptoms of sbs syndrome show up? I heard it could be like two weeks before the baby shows any signs other than throwing up and fussiness. Also new what is the difference between spitup and vomiting? One more thing how are you qualified to answer the questions truthfully?
Shaken babies have lifelong symptoms, obviously if they are mentally retarded as an infant they don’t just over that, although the brain has amazing plasticity. What kind of adults do SBSs become?
I am wondering if there is NECK DAMAGE in SBS victims too. Can such damage be seen on an MRI taken on adults who were shaken as babies?
