George asks…
raising tadpoles?

Baby Talk answers:
I once raised tadpoles. I started them on boiled egg yolk which I strained through a cloth (they were very small when I got them) When they reached about 2mm in size I switched them over to fish flakes that I crushed to more manageable size. I also occasionally crushed small bits of lettuce leaves for them.

Helen asks…
Can you help me with information about raising tadpoles?
I read where feeding them a lightly boiled, frozen, lettuce works. But would something like Tetra Fin Goldfish Flakes all crunched up work too? Thanks!

Baby Talk answers:
It worked for the ones I kept. They all turned into froglets about a month ago.
You probably already know this but be careful not to give them water straight from the tap as the chlorine could kill them. Ideally if they need more water you should give them rainwater, but if you don’t have any of this then leave some tap-water in an open container for about 24 hours to let the chlorine evaporate off.
A good rule of thumb is to never put more new water in their environment than they already have. I.e. If they are swimming around in 1l of water now then don’t put more than 1l of new water in with them in a day or the shock might kill them.

Sandra asks…
Do you need a filter if you are raising tadpoles?
I want to keep a few tadpoles from the pond in front of my house. Can I just keep them in a fishtank without a filter??

Baby Talk answers:
You can if you keep the water clean. The water must be dechlorinated. You can buy products to take chlorine out of your water at pet shops or at Walmart. I collected rain water for my tadpoles and used an undergravel filter. It helped keep the water clean and also provided oxygen. I have also raised them outside in large containers without a filter. I put pond plants in with the tadpoles. Check out this site for more info. Http://exoticpets.about.com/od/frogsandtoads/a/tadpoles.htm

Jenny asks…
raising tadpoles and setting them free?
My children will be raising tadpoles in the spring for a homeschool project. We live in Illinois and I fully intend on setting the frogs free when they’re grown. What type of frog should I order, that will be able to survive the harsh winters here?

Baby Talk answers:
Try the Northern Leopard Frog.
Since you are going to need to know how to care for the tadpoles, take a look at this:
