My suggestion is just put a fitted sheet over a firm mattress with nothing else in it. Reduce the changes of SIDS. Just my recommendation. bumpers/comforters are just for decoration. If you are worried about your baby getting too cold, dress your baby in a warm zip up sleeper. Carters makes really nice, warm ones.

How do you define cheap? Have you thought about purchasing a basic gingham or solid set that matches the colors of an expensive set and accessorizing with items from the expensive bedding set: pillows, curtains, blankets, wall hangings, diaper stacker, lamp, etc. I think the overall picture is what make a "designer" looking nursery…not necessarily just the bedding. Just a thought!

The blanket was very soft and comfortable. The sheet was, too, but your comforter might have to go through the wash and dryer before it becomes more flexible. This wasn't a big deal for me; in fact it was a bonus because I sewed a pocket on the back and used it as a wall hanging.
I painted three walls a taupe color and painted the wall where I used the comforter as a wall decoration a dark chocolate brown.
The colors I used are similar to the ones on this page:
I considered using sage green on the three walls and hunter green on my accent wall to match the colors in the bedding, but decided to go with the shades of brown and I'm very glad that I made that selection.
