Helen asks…

love quotations?

Baby Talk answers:

Love to Love calleth,
Love unto Love replieth-
From the ends of the earth, drawn by invisible bands,
Over the dawning and darkening lands
Love cometh to Love.

-Robert Bridges

as an alternative, I once read this in a Patricia Cornwell novel and it made me think of my daughter (the subject matter was the untimely death of an 11 yr. old girl and this is what the mother put on her tombstone)

There is no other in the World—
Mine was the only one

-Emily Dickinson

And it touched me in a way that all mothers are deeply and irrevocably touched by the lives of their children.

Linda asks…

What are some love quotations/excerpts that are lesser known?

I see the same quotations on every page. Does anyone know of some that are lesser known? Or, perhaps, a helpful source?

Baby Talk answers:

“ My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep: the more I give to thee,
The more I have, for both are infinite.”
(Juliet, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, II.2)

Chris asks…

Any quotations on love and marriage that incorporate the beach or sailing?

I’m getting married in the Caribbean on the beach. I’m looking for quotations that incorporate sailing or the beach to use as possible readings in my wedding ceremony or just on my program and elsewhere. I’d really appreciate any ideas you have. Thanks!

Baby Talk answers:

marriage is like a beach, if you look too close at it it looks grainy and hard… but if you just accept it for what it is it is just soft

Charles asks…

Do you know any teachers or organisations who are specialized in Carl Hilty?

I presented my question ‘Who and which book does the following quote about friendship belong to? ‘to Education-Quotation category three days ago but deleted it because I could not get any answer.

So, please provide me with the above-mentioned my question or any idea for me to reach my original question as follows.

I am searching for the source book and the author of the following contents of the phrase. (This is my translation from Japanese phrase I found in a Japanese book, so this must be different from exact original phrase.)

“The best things you may find in your life are good friends and good teachers. It is your purpose to find them and you must be luckey if you can get them.”
It is said to be written by Carl Hilty, a Swiss philosopher, but it is uncertain.

Baby Talk answers:

yea

David asks…

Just wrote this, whadaya think (not that long)?

I guess this is a vignette. Oh, and it’s fictional. This is a character talking.

I think I’ll call it “Naked.”

I sleep naked, save undergarments. I sleep with the sheets twisting around my body, locking me securely to the bed. I toss in the night like the sea’s waves, and as I curl, turn, open and close, their softness, whiteness, and comfort flow with me. In the heat of the summer, air escapes beneath the billows, cooling me. In the cold of the winter, I pull them up close, tight; where they’ll surround me, share with me their warmth. In the dark of a nightmare, though, they are something less comforting.

One night, after a bad dream, I woke up choking, gasping for air. The sheets were waves crashing into me. I was drowning beneath them. I flung out my arms in fright, trying to jump out of the tangle. I flew out and my head cracked against the wall as I inhaled slowly and my mouth moved to form the words which I will not say. The words which will show, yes, I am afraid.

I curled into the bed again, breaths coming out in short bursts and returning quietly. I let myself back into the world of closed eyes, of marvelous dreams and disturbing nightmares, slowly yet fast. My eyes closed before I knew it., and I fell back into my mother’s womb.

- I tacked on the last paragraph about a minute or two after I wrote the first two paragraphs. Can you tell?
- Does my writing style annoy you?

I know that was a little weird. It doesn’t help that it’s 3 a.m. and my brain isn’t working quite right.

Yeah, I wasn’t really sure how to phrase the first sentence, haha. I mean, I think they’d wear underwear, so they wouldn’t be completely naked. But maybe not. I’ll have to decide and rewrite the sentence.

Baby Talk answers:

Yeah, pretty good. I agree with one of the comments above, there’s definitely a rhythmic feel to it which makes you want to read on.
The Rhythm is sort of spoilt, though, by the start of the second paragraph. I think it would sound more effecting if you started with simply ‘I woke up choking, gasping for air.’ You’ve already set yourself up for describing a bad dream at the end of the first paragraph so I don’t think the bit before matters too much.
It’s just a thought though.
About the last paragraph, I like that a lot too. You get a real sense of inevitability, that you’re talking about something uncontrollable. I think it fits well.
