Make sure that the baby’s head does not get caught between the bars of the crib by making sure the spindles are no farther than 2 and 3/8 inches apart and that the header and footer boards are securely attached with no spaces for the baby to get caught in. The joints and fixings should be tight .Otherwise the crib will wobble. It should only take one hand to raise and lower the side rail. Once raised, it should be fully secured. The final point to verify is that the mattress is clean and firm and the  top of the side rail is at least 22 inches above the mattress.

A new mattress that would fit in the crib is always better. Nursery bedding can present a risk of suffocation, so tie bumper strings tightly and ensure that the baby can’t pull down the bumper, or simply remove the bumper. For babies under a year old, overheating can be caused by using duvets, quilts, sheepskin, and pillows. Sheets and blankets may be combined and used. Also keep a thermometer in the room ready for use. You will be astonished at a baby’s ability to climb and reach things, so cribs must be kept away from curtains, window blinds, cords, lamps or nearby furniture onto which they might lift themselves.
