Anyone who has been baby shopping recently, especially if they’ve browsed online, will tell you that the vast selection of baby bedding online can actually make a decision harder instead of easier. Looking for animals? Find anything you can think of, from caterpillar baby bedding to safari themes. Angels are another popular theme, both for shoppers and designers. There are hundreds of different bedding sets to choose from. And if you want nursery rhymes or cartoon characters, put aside a couple of weeks just to browse!

Whether it’s boy baby bedding or baby girl, it can be really hard to stick to a budget, because everything is irresistibly adorable. To be a bit blunt, that designer bedding set you paid $1000 for is going to go through the same spitup and diaper leaks as a $200 set. So now you might be wondering what actually is important. Here are some ideas:

– You may think bumper pads are a given, but there is a growing concern that they are actually harmful. The idea behind a crib bumper is to protect baby from the hard bars of the crib, but if the bumper comes loose it may cause suffocation. To be safe, it’s best to just keep bumpers out of the crib altogether, or at least until your baby reaches birthday number one. If you decide to keep them in anyway, make sure the ties are on the outside of the crib and very securely tied.

– The term “crib sheet” refers only to the fitted sheet, because flat sheets are unnecessary (and potentially dangerous) for newborns. Not all crib sheets fit all mattresses, and the wrong sized sheet can pop off the mattress and cause safety risks. New parents may be unprepared for the messes that babies bring with them, but those white sheets you bought won’t look so adorable after a couple of diaper leaks and some spitup. If you’re concerned about your mattress, invest in a waterproof cover, too.

– Don’t overheat your baby with too many clothes and blankets. She only needs as much bundling as you do. If it’s winter and she really needs extra coverage, use a wearable blanket instead of a loose one. Pillows are a suffocation risk and babies actually sleep better without them, so keep them out of the crib.

When choosing baby crib bedding, safety comes first. Cute bedding is nice, but it’s of no use at all if it’s not safe.
