Parenting Classes? The Pros and Cons
So you’ve just learned you’re going to have a baby, congratulations! Being a parent can be very fulfilling but there are traps for the unwary. If this is your first baby, there are so many things you’ll need to know. So where do you go to find out about how to best care for your new baby?
There are plenty of parenting classes available today and you may be wondering if these are for you. What are the pros and cons of taking these types of classes? We’ll examine some good reasons below that you may or may not want to participate in these classes.
Now you may have had previous experience such as babysitting or looking after your friends’ kids. Trust me when I tell you this doesn’t even give you a vague idea of what parenting involves. Caring for babies is an enormous responsibility and although it is very rewarding, you do need to know what you are doing to avoid common parenting problems. Parenting classes may be the answer you are looking for.
You will learn the basics of how to change a diaper, how to properly feed baby and how to put your baby down to sleep. Parenting classes can provide hands on learning rather than just learning theory. You’ll get to practice handling a baby, although dolls are usually used for these sessions.
Are the classes affordable? Parenting classes come in a variety of formats and prices, so there’s a good chance you will find one to suit your budget. In some cities you’ll be able to find free classes put on by non profit organizations.
If you’re a first time mom with no family support, a real bonus for you is all the new moms you’ll meet in the same situation. These classes attract a large volume of of people so chances are you’ll make a heap of new friends who will be able to provide you with support when you need it.
Committing to a class schedule does demand some time. A lot of expectant moms work all day until just before the birth. If you’re not working, you may not be able to get to and from the classes easily. These are a couple of things to consider.
It will be well worth your time however, if you can, to experience these classes for yourself. You will quickly see the many ways that parenting classes will benefit you as a first time mom. Apart from all the help and information, you’ll be able to meet new friends. Most importantly, you’ll be able to tackle the job of motherhood with new found confidence!
