When you are a parent who wants your child to excel and succeed, remember that that should pertain to more than just schoolwork!  Making sure that your child learns to take care of their body and to feel really comfortable in it is a high priority for children growing up in today’s society, and this is where self defence courses can come in. Many parents have reservations about enrolling their children in self defence classes thinking it will cause tendencies for violence, however this is not the case.

Upon closer inspection, parents will discover that respect for the individual and others are one of the most important lessons taught in self defence classes. All students are equal on the mat, and they all pay attention to their teacher. There is a real sense of accomplishment and pride as your child masters the forms and the movements that go with self defence, and this all moves towards teaching your child self confidence.  Self confidence is one of the most important traits that your child can learn and even the way that they carry themselves after they learn it can be a deterrent to bullying.

Another important thing that many children learn in self-defence is conflict management. Self defence students are taught that their skills are to never to be used offensively, they are for defensive purposes only.  Many parents have seen positive changes in organization and respect for authority in children who originally had self control issues. Contrary to what many people expect, this serves to prevent fights for occurring in the first place.

Your kids will also be spending less time at the computer or gaming console as well. Lots of parents despair about their kids who don’t play sports, but the truth is that competitive sports are not for all children. It is definitely easier to convince children the value of learning a skill such as self defence. Consider how much healthier your child might be if they found an exercise program that they really liked, not one that they merely tolerated.

Finally, don’t forget the relief that you may feel simply because you know that you know that your child can take care of themselves. This is more than just defending themselves in a physical situation, but is also includes knowing that they can show authority the proper respect and that they can feel confident in their independence.  When people weigh up the benefits, they can really see why many parents choose to enroll their children in self defence classes.
