SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — The South Korean government said Wednesday that foreign investors are continuing to invest in Korean bonds, a positive sign amid increased geopolitical risk. “Foreign investors are recording sizeable net buying of bonds, helping interest rates to decline,” said the Ministry of Strategy and Finance. Foreigners bought 617 billion won ($492 million) in the spot market and 615.4 billion won in futures on Tuesday, the ministry said. The yield on 3-year Korean government bonds slid to 3.59% this week from 3.76% on May 19. Steady foreign investment in bonds comes as Korean equities and the currency are being battered by concerns over escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula. However, the Korea Stock Price Index recovered on Wednesday, closing up 21.29 points to 1,582.12, while the Korean won/dollar rate stabilized to end at 1,253.30.
